'Palestinian Authority' deals with opposition to talks
The 'Palestinian Authority' deals with opposition to direct talks with Israel in their own inimitable way: They beat the opponents.Palestinian Authority security forces on Wednesday used force to prevent dozens of Palestinians in Ramallah from voicing their opposition to the US-sponsored direct talks with Israel.Well, if they held elections once in a while, maybe people would feel that the decision makers represented them and not themselves.
PA security agents and policemen who stormed the building, where the press conference was supposed to be held, first turned off the lights and then beat some of the participants.
The policemen also beat cameramen, Khaled Milhem and Aysar Barghouti before confiscating their equipment. The two work for the local Al-Watan TV.
The incident is an indication of growing tensions among Palestinians in light of the PA leadership’s decision to abandon its previous conditions for conducting direct negotiations with Israel.
Of course, if they held elections, the elections might tell us that the average 'Palestinian' would rather not be part of 'two states living alongside each other in peace and security.' And if that's the case, I'd rather know it now than later.

The unelected PA deals with its opponents just like Hamas deals with theirs. How long have we been told the Palestinians were ready for democracy?
The true answer appears to be "never" and it is going to be a long time before elections are ever held again in "Palestinians." And that hasn't elicited criticism from a single Western official or from the so-called human rights community.
As it stands, the PA's contempt for its own people is only exceeded by the alacrity with which the Western World displays complete indifference towards the absence of democracy and real freedom among the Palestinian Arabs.
Something tells me direct talks won't change it in the foreseeable future.
