Illinois candidate forum to go ahead without Giannoulias

The Illinois candidates' forum on US - Israel relations will go ahead despite the refusal of Alexi Giannoulias, the Democratic nominee for the Senate and formerly President Obama's banker, to participate.

This statement was issued by Republican Senate nominee Mark Kirk.
The forum, organized by To Protect Our Heritage and cosponsored by Chicago-area synagogues, is meant to provide Illinois voters an opportunity to question candidates about critically important issues related to the U.S.-Israel relationship.

“We need a U.S. Senator who is not afraid to lead when it comes to defending America’s strongest democratic ally in the Middle East,” Congressman Kirk said. “Israel faces growing security threats from Hamas terrorists in Gaza and Hezbollah terrorists in Southern Lebanon. Meanwhile, Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons poses an existential threat to the future of the Jewish State. I look forward to sharing my views at the upcoming forum and I urge Treasurer Giannoulias to reconsider his decision not to participate.”

According to the forum host, “although all campaigns and candidates agreed to the forums and the conditions months ago, on August 9, the Giannoulias campaign announced that Mr. Giannoulias had previous commitments.’” The forum host added that “several Democratic community leaders” have been in discussion with the Giannoulias campaign to persuade the candidate to participate.

The U.S.-Israel policy forum will be held at Temple Beth-El, 3610 Dundee Road in Northbrook, Ill. on Sunday, August 22, 2010 at 7:00 PM.
If any of you are attending, I would welcome your views on the forum via email to the address on my home page.

In other news, Alexi Giannoulias announced on Tuesday that he supports building a victory mosque at Ground Zero in New York City.

Hmmm. This could be a turning of some corner. "Temple Beth-El" is URJ? And they are providing a chance for their members to listen to non-(D) candidates? Will they do it without mocking them afterwards? I wonder if RJC will have a table there... this could be amazing.
