Erdogan: 'Hamas is not a terrorist group'

Can we call this the icing on the cake? It's yet another outrageous statement from Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan says he doesn't view radical Palestinian group Hamas, Israel's arch-foe, as a terrorist organisation.

'Hamas are resistance fighters who are struggling to defend their land. They have won an election,' Erdogan said in a public speech on Friday in the central city of Konya, broadcast live on television.

'I have told this to US officials... I do not accept Hamas as a terrorist organisation. I think the same today. They are defending their land,' he said.

The United States and the European Union blacklist Hamas as a terrorist group despite its victory in Palestinian elections in 2006.
Read the whole thing. It's time for Israel to acknowledge reality and cut diplomatic relations with Turkey. Sometimes you can only save your dignity by being the one to make the inevitable break.

One of the scarier, and unreported, developments in our post 9-11 world is Turkey's slow abandonment of the secular society. Turkish presence and backing of the “flotilla” only makes the direction of Turkish policy more clear.

Summer. 2010, will be very interesting to say the least.

The idiots in Israel are sitting around waiting for Turkey to humiliate them. Any normal self-respecting country would have pulled the plug on relations after Monday. Turkey's policy towards Israel has changed and not because of anything Israel did. Erdogan with his views: does that sound like a friend? Time to get on with it!

If Israel offered Turkey's military a safe have in which to defect to, canceled all military contracts and cooperation, cut ties with the emergent islamist state, Israel would be better off than where it is now.

Turkey's military has been undergoing a purge. So lets give them a place to escape to.

Turkey is a reconstituted islamist entity. It is delegitimizing itself with its actions and words. It should be booted out of NATO, it shouldn't be included in EU.

Islamists are as islamists do. They are dangerous, and need to be contained until they die off. One should not ever give aid and comfort to them, never under any circumstances should they get weaponry of any sort.

I'm wondering if people (NATO) think Turkey will only go after Israel. Will India be the next on the list? And so NATO needs to figure out what to do about their longtime NATO partner... either NATO cuts them loose, somehow blocks them, or NATO helps destroy the only democratic countries participating in modern technologically based enterprises. What will you do, NATO?
