More details about Obama's letter to Abu Mazen
'Moderate' 'Palestinian' PresidentU.S. President Barack Obama assured the Palestinian Authority that his administration is committed to a two-state solution and that a future Palestinian state will be independent and have territorial continuity, PA secretary general Tayeb Abdel Rahim said on Sunday.I'm waiting to hear someone call Bibi publicly on those 'commitments.'
Rahim said Obama relayed his message in a letter delivered by U.S. Mideast envoy George Mitchell while he visited the region last week in a bid to restart peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.
...
Rahim also said the U.S. vowed to assign blame publicly to any party that takes provocative actions or jeopardizes prospects for peace.
Obama also reportedly has promised Abbas a prolonged Israeli settlement freeze in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, Army Radio reported earlier on Sunday quoting London-based Arab-language newspaper Al-Hayat.
According to the report, chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told the Arab League ministers Saturday night that Obama made his promise off the record in order to avoid conflict with right-wing factions in Israel.
Palestinian sources also claim that Israel has committed to continuing the moratorium on settlement construction in the West Bank beyond ten months.

All it will do as make war a more attractive option.
I would not be surprised if the current freeze is extended in September, regardless of whether or not the "proximity talks" go anywhere.
What could go wrong indeed
I commend you for your letter to the the President Bush. It is a pity those who are screaming foul now for the most part kept their mouths shut then.
If our good friend lied through his teeth about the "man of peace" Abbas and his "peaceful" people forgetting his "one time friends" by forsaking his promises on Jerusalem for 8 whole years, not even going himself let alone sending a low-level representative to the 40th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem, we had to know it was going to be all down hill from there.
...and it is.
"ZOA Criticizes Bush Administration For Not Attending Israel's Jerusalem Day Festivities"
http://www.zoa.org/sitedocuments/pressrelease_view.asp?pressreleaseID=68
"ZOA National President Morton A. Klein said, “This Bush Administration decision is deeply disappointing and misconceived. President Bush has put himself on record repeatedly and publicly as supporting recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital before he became president and said ‘I will begin the process of moving the American embassy to Jerusalem on the day I’m inaugurated.’ Yet, he has exercised successive presidential waivers to the Jerusalem Embassy Act, overwhelmingly passed by Congress, that recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and mandates locating the U.S. embassy there, just as it locates all other embassies in the capital cities of foreign countries. This latest decision not to attend the Jerusalem Reunification celebrations, like his decision to exercise successive presidential waivers, simply tells the world that President Bush is not serious about recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, despite his own earlier words and official U.S. policy."
There is only one reason for President Bush’s decision: the fear of Palestinian Arab terrorism if the U.S. carries out it own policy of treating Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Recent history has shown that appeasing Palestinian Arab terrorists by invoking presidential waivers and now boycotting Jerusalem Day events is tragically mistaken. Presidential waivers did not stop Palestinian terrorism or help negotiations. The Oslo terror war followed in 2000 anyway because the PA would not commit itself to a state alongside Israel. There is thus no security issue connected to the embassy waiver. To therefore hold back and now to boycott Jerusalem Day ceremonies sends a message to terrorists that U.S. policy can be held hostage to the violence of terrorists which it anyway fails to stop. This is a complete negation of the Bush Doctrine, which argues that fighting terrorism must be done without compromise.

"Palestinian" leaders are known liars when it comes to things they claim to have in agreements.
One group's leader will say about an inter-"Palestinian" disagreement, "Yes, we are extremely close to an agreement" while the other side will say, "No, we're not."
"We're going to sign an agreement soon" versus "No, we aren't." It's acceptable in their culture to lie.
At a point in history where America's current president is absolutely refusing to criticize the "Palestinians" in any way, who knows what is in the letter from Obama. The last person in the world who will correct their claims is Obama himself.
Of course, Obama is Israel's enemy so he could have given Abu Mazen all sorts of horrendous promises about what Obama will do to the Jews if Israel doesn't commit national suicide at these proximity meetings (G-d forbid).
It's like watching Israel's enemies playing ping pong with each other (only in this case, Obama is refusing to return Abu Mazen's serve).
There's no way to know what they're really up to until the proximity meetings explode because Israel isn't agreeing to pull defenses back to the pre-2000 positions (which seems to be the first absurd demand on Abu Mazen's long list of absurd demands to Israel in these talks).
