What is it about Republicans?
Two South Carolina county GOP chairmen thought they were doing Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) (pictured) a favor when they defended him as someone who '
like the Jews' watches the pennies so the dollars take care of themselves. What is with these people?(Hat Tip:
Memeorandum).
Bamberg County GOP Chairman Edwin Merwin and Orangeburg County GOP Chairman James Ulmer penned a piece together responding to criticism by state Rep. Bakari Sellers over DeMint’s opposition to Congressional earmarks.
The defense of DeMint, however, was anchored in an ethnic stereotype.
“There is a saying that the Jews who are wealthy got that way not by watching dollars, but instead by taking care of the pennies and the dollars taking care of themselves,” Ulmer and Merwin wrote. “By not using earmarks to fund projects for South Carolina and instead using actual bills, DeMint is watching our nation’s pennies and trying to preserve our country’s wealth and our economy’s viability to give all an opportunity to succeed.”
Umm… who in mainstream America thinks it’s a good idea to write something like that in a guest editorial? Especially in light of the racially-motivated attention garnered by South Carolina Republican activists over the past few months.
It’s people like Ulmer and Merwin that make many folks fear for the future of the once Grand Ole Party.
As it happens, Jim DeMint was one of my first followers on Twitter (he's still there), and I'm sure that he is as sickened by these stupid comments as I am and for the same reasons. There are enough problems in the United States with Jews instinctively voting Democratic. Stupid comments like this - from people who may not have even understood what they were saying - can only make matters worse.

DeMint's a great guy. I hope he throws his hat into the ring for 2012. Those 2 bozos who made those comments may hurt. Certainly the Democrats are sure to make something of it. But just look at the huge number of anti-Israel, anti-Semitic garbage among the Democrats! They are endless and include Dear Leader Hussein, himself.
I don't think Senator DeMint appreciates the comments. They don't define conservatism or most people's regard for the need for reason and truth in life. Its just a shame that some people say stupid things - I don't let it affect me.
Well, this Texan Jew forgives DeMint for his friends/backers. As if he really needed forgiving - DeMint is a real standup guy, and I wish we had 40 people like him in the Senate. Heck, I'd settle for 1 with 1/4 of his brains and values in the White House.
As for those 2 guys, maybe someone should remind them that it is always a good idea to have your work reviewed and edited before publishing, preferably by someone who doesn't think exactly like you do. It prevents moronic statements like those made in the article.
OK, Senator, so when do you form the exploratory committee for the 2012 election?
I'm with you, Paul, in this one. DeMint is an enormous asset for the Republicans. He and Mike Pence are my 2 faves for 2012.
Wish the elections were sooner. It's going to be an awful next 3 1/4 years if Dear Leader and his henchmen aren't removed soon.
