Jaw-dropping statement of the day

Monday marked the 15th anniversary of Israel's 'peace treaty' with Jordan. President Obumbler came up with this jaw-dropping statement.
"As we honor this historic event, we remember that peace is always possible despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles," said Obama in a statement released by the White House.

...

"The courage of King Hussein and Prime Minister Rabin demonstrated that a commitment to communication, cooperation, and genuine reconciliation can help change the course of history," Obama added.

...

The president added: "As we work with Arabs and Israelis to expand the circle of peace, we take inspiration from what Jordan and Israel achieved fifteen years ago, knowing that the destination is worthy of the struggle."
There are a number of points worth noting, none of which speaks to the momentousness of this peace treaty. First, there was a de facto state of non-belligerence between Israel and Jordan for 27 years before the peace treaty was signed. The achievement - the only achievement - was getting the two countries to acknowledge it.

Second, there were virtually no territorial disputes between the two sides, because King Hussein had waived his claim to Judea and Samaria in 1988. Israel gave Jordan a small strip of land in the desert, which it is leasing on a long-term basis. There was no need to uproot anyone living on that land, nor was there any need to make security arrangements with respect to it.

The fact that it took 27 years despite these two mitigating factors doesn't show that peace is 'always possible,' but rather that peace in this region is almost impossible.

Finally, one must look to the state of relations between Israel and Jordan today. It is much like the state of relations between Israel and Egypt (a cold peace), as it has been since King Hussein died. Again, peace was made with an individual and not with a people. There is constant pressure in Jordan to abrogate the treaty. The main difference between Egypt and Jordan is that Egypt is much more of a military power (thanks to billions of dollars in American military aid).

Taken in context, Obama's statement looks totally foolish.

You are being too kind, seriously.

He has not one clue re the ME, and Israel, especially. Notice the self-hating Jews he uses.

I will bet that he never really met a Jew he liked, other than Saul Alinsky, and knows less about Judaism than Carter, which is quite a statement coming from me.

Can it be only 9 months he has been sullying the White House? Whoops, forgot a few things like his trip to Copenhagen, with the ever-lovely Michelle going the day before, to try and dazzle them into giving Chicago the Olympics, and his playing golf more in 9 months thsn President Bush did in, IIRC, 2 1/2 years?

He is, in my almost 72 years, the very worst of the worst, and also the greatest danger to Israel and the USA in our history. And his blathering that you posted proves it. He will give the arab countries anything they want...which is essentially the destruction (G-d forbid) of Israel.

He is just slobbering thinking of all the things he wants to do to Israel....not one of them good. And he will leave Israel to go after Iran, the coward.

Any Jew who voted for him? [Deleted.]

Even our [USA] service personnel can't escape [d]Ear Leader's doozies. He actually said the following to them in Florida [10/26/09] with a straight face:

“I will never rush the solemn decision of sending you into harm’s way. I won’t risk your lives unless it is absolutely necessary. And if it is necessary, we will back you up to the hilt.”

"...And if it is necessary, we will back you up to the hilt." And if it is necessary!!!!? My goodness! How inspirational!

So no. It's not surprising to find that he has uncurable foot-in-mouth disease.

The peace treaty with Jordan may not last. Its demise wouldn't alter Israel's strategic situation. But if it was to disappear with Egypt, Israel would find itself faced with a heavily armed enemy to its south. A piece of paper in and of itself will never guarantee Israel's safety. Only the IDF can secure the state's existence.

@Norman: We must rely on G-d. Our survival continues to be supernatural.
