The Marie Antoinette of the Middle East
Asma al-Assad, the wife of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, has been dubbed the Marie Antoinette of the Middle East, due to her expensive tastes in clothing in accessories. A photo album published on the Facebook account of Syrian First Lady Asma Al-Assad entitled “Asma Al-Assad: Syria’s First Lady and All-Natural Beauty” features a collection of pictures of the first lady dressed in high-end brands Chanel, Dior, and Bottega Veneta.Were it not for the fact that Assad rules Syria with an iron hand, this sort of thing could be a prelude to a coup.
Al Assad has also been noted for her affinity for Christian Louboutin heels, which she is seen wearing in a majority of the photographs. The heels cost around $1,000 a pair.
“At a time when Syrians are suffering from malnutrition of infants, rampant poverty and unemployment, and stifling of their liberties, Asma al-Assad is catwalking the corridors of humanity dressed as a queen and showing how insensitive the Assad regime has become to our plight and miseries,” Farid Ghadry, President of The Reform Party of Syria, told The Media Line. “Islamic terrorism and extremism will continue unabated because the West supports our oppressors.”
“The pictures highlight her designer shoes, bags, and jewelry,” The Reform Party of Syria, an opposition party based in the US, stated in a press release.
The fashion world seems to be uninterested in Ghadry’s concerns, as Al-Assad continually tops ‘best-dressed’ lists worldwide.
