British paranoia: Diplomats fear Israelis will spy on them? The Shepherd's hotel in Jerusalem's Sheikh Jarrah quarter is apparently located near the British consulate in 'east' Jerusalem. During a tour of the hotel last week with a Meretz-affiliated city councilor, British diplomats expressed fear that Israelis living on the site would spy on the consulate.
The tour, which also included American diplomats, was led by Jerusalem city councilman Meir Margalit of Meretz, who is also active in the Committee Against House Demolitions. During the visit, Margalit said, the British diplomats asked their American colleagues to pressure Israel on the issue and take the lead in applying international pressure to stop settlement building. And you thought a consulate does nothing but issue visas and serve the foreign country's nationals in the area. Heh. Now we'll find out what the Brits are really up to in their consulate. It looks like this:
"The British said explicitly - the Israelis don't pay attention to us, but if you apply pressure, there is a chance," Margalit recounted. The U.K. envoys also expressed concern that construction activity so close to the consulate could lead to an intelligence leak.
