'Our friends the Syrians'

A Boston Globe editorial gives some idea of conditions in a country that the Obama administration regards as target number 1 for a 'thaw' in relations.
Human Rights Watch heard from former detainees, lawyers, and foreign ambassadors posted to Damascus, and their testimonies about Syria's Supreme State Security Court depict a travesty of justice.

Defendants are thrown in jail for insulting Assad or for being found with subversive writing, CDs, or videos. They are held for months without being charged, and frequently tortured. When they finally appear before a security court judge, their defense lawyers have no role to play. And the judge pays no heed to complaints that defendants have given confessions under torture.

When asked about these mockeries of legal procedure, Syrian officials bring up Guantanamo and American torture of enemy combatants.
This is the regime Barack Obama is dying to talk to. Harry Truman must be rolling over in his grave.

UPDATE 2:10 PM

A blogger died today in a prison in the other regime Obama has been dying to talk to: Iran (Hat Tip: Instapundit). Maybe it's time for Obama to forget about his new friends.

Its Orwellian. Terrorist regimes are the new progressive linchpins of the world order.

And Israel?

The proverbial skunk at the party.
