About Me
- Name: Carl in Jerusalem
- Location: Jerusalem, Israel
I am an Orthodox Jew - some would even call me 'ultra-Orthodox.' Born in Boston, I was a corporate and securities attorney in New York City for seven years before making aliya to Israel in 1991 (I don't look it but I really am that old :-). I have been happily married to the same woman for thirty-five years, and we have eight children (bli ayin hara) ranging in age from 13 to 33 years and nine grandchildren. Four of our children are married! Before I started blogging I was a heavy contributor on a number of email lists and ran an email list called the Matzav from 2000-2004. You can contact me at: IsraelMatzav at gmail dot com

Olmert may bear a resemblance to Shrek... but Jameel over at The Muqata has one of the most beautiful video clips you'll ever see in this life. Its about David Shapira, the hero of Mercaz Hav Rav and how he speaks about the Shema - about it being a symbol of heroism for the Jewish people and how R. Akiva, the greatest of Jewish Sages, who was martyred by the Romans for illegally teaching the Torah, finally understood it on his deathbed. I thought: here is what it means to be a Jew and to show one's love for one's people.
HAT TIP: The Muqata: DAVID SHAPIRA: BRAVERY UNDER FIRE
He's light years from Olmert and all his ilk. Like his Biblical namesake David, he thought he was going to die in the Yeshiva and submitted himself to the yoke of Kadosh Baruch Hu, The Holy One. He is a beautiful man, a righteous man and incidentally, went into the war as an officer in Paratroopers Battalion 980. The Jewish people needs more individuals like him. They are the future of Israel.
See it all, if its the last thing you do in this life and you will understand what it truly means to be a Jew.
Correction: it was Battalion 890.
For a Jew, to give up one's life for G-d is an honor - Kiddush HaShem. It is an act of merit to love G-d with all your heart and with all your soul and to understand that no one else is sovereign in this world but the One who created you and it is Him alone you must serve. Yes, the Shema represents for the Jewish people the essence of what it means to serve Hashem, both while they have the great privilege of being alive and when they face death.
No one else can describe what that means and only R. Akiva understood at the end the real mystery behind the Jewish creed.
