Al Ahram: To check Hezbullah, Israel threatened Syria

Israel Radio, citing a report in the Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram, reports that Israel sent a message to Syria at the outbreak of Operation Cast Lead indicating that if Hezbullah attacked Israel, the response would be the destruction of infrastructure in Damascus. As a result, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad warned Hezbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah not to attack Israel during Operation Cast Lead. The message was sent to Assad via an unnamed European diplomat.

Especially given that Olmert passed on a chance to attack Syria in 2006, I wonder if Olmert would have had the you-know-whats to follow through on that threat. I have my doubts.

For those of you who don't trust my Hebrew and ask for MSM sources all the time, more on this story here.

The chinless ophthalmologist saw what the IDF did in Gaza and reined in Hezbollah. He may not think much of Olmert but he saw what the IDF did and he didn't want to get his country drawn into a wider war.
