NZ Television: Gaza strike 'motivated by the fact that country is holding elections in just 6 weeks'

This is a television news broadcast from New Zealand with a BBC report in the middle. At the end of the BBC report, the news anchor says "some analysts are saying that this strike is motivated by the fact that the country (Israel) is holding elections in six weeks."

Let's go to the videotape and then I'll comment.

The attack on Gaza is motivated by the fact that Israelis can no longer tolerate the continued bombardment of rockets from Gaza. Let all who think otherwise come spend a week living (sleeplessly) in Sderot. It should have been undertaken months ago (and that's without even talking about the fact that the expulsion of Gaza's Jews that led to the increased rocket fire should never have happened). The fact that it took being six weeks before an election and an extra spike in rocket fire to bring about the attack is to the eternal shame of Israel's cowardly politicians.

But I wouldn't say the attack was 'motivated' by the elections. There are plenty of other good reasons for Israel attacking Gaza. About 3000 of them over the last year.

and 10,000 in the past 7 years.

All of that is true. But it looks like a politically calculated move to. An Israeli cynic would say what's different between the situation now and that a couple of years ago? One word: elections. Israeli politicians are good at looking out for themselves and not so much for the country.
