Bush's legacy: A 'Palestinian' reichlet?
At the Philadelphia Bulletin, David Bedein reports that US President George W. Bush is going to get his legacy on Tuesday and it's not going to be pretty: Bush is going to support a UN Security Council resolution that will make the creation of a 'Palestinian' Tomorrow, the U.N. Security Council, is due to pass a historic resolution that will anchor establishing a Palestinian state in the principles established at the Nov. 2007 Annapolis conference [and CiJ] last month’s Sharm el-Sheikh summit.What Bedein is referring to is a 'Chapter 7' resolutions. Chapter 7 Security Council resolutions are binding and the Council has the right to order the use of force to enforce them. Here's more from Haaretz.
This will bind the U.N. to compel any future Israeli prime minister to recognize an independent, sovereign Palestinian state.
The policy would also be applied to Likud leader Binyamin Netanyahu, an opponent of establishing a Palestinian state, if he should win the coming elections and become prime minister again.
The United Nations Security Council is expected to adopt on Tuesday a resolution calling on Israel and the Palestinian Authority to continue negotiation over the outstanding "core issues" in 2009, even after the Israeli general election in February and the end of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' term so as to implement the two-state vision. Senior Jerusalem officials said the measure could lock Benjamin Netanyahu into the Annapolis process should the Likud chairman be elected prime minister.Note that in Haaretz's formulation it only sounds like Israel is bound to negotiate. But what does it mean to 'negotiate' when the outcome is preordained?
U.S. President George W. Bush is personally shepherding the resolution, as part of an attempt to enshrine the Annapolis process in a resolution from the highest international forum. Bush believes that this would serve to sum up his legacy with regard to the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and emphasize his vision of "two states for two peoples." The outgoing president also hopes that the Security Council resolution will render the Annapolis process irreversible and invulnerable to the shock of changing administrations in the U.S. and in Israel.
It gets worse.
In a weekend meeting in Washington, outgoing Secretary of State Condoleezza told Geneva Initiative cofounder Yossi Beilin that the Bush administration seeks to give expression to the significant developments that have occurred in recent years in the Israeli and Palestinian context. She added that the situation in the West Bank has changed greatly, with the introduction of law and order on an unprecedented scale. She said the Israeli and Palestinian positions have become markedly closer and it is important these gains are not lost after the Israeli election and the expected change in leadership.If Condi Clueless and Peres' poodle are in agreement, we have a real problem on our hands. Look for Bush to be working for an oil company by mid-2009. Not good.

I feel like President Bush put a knife in my back, and in the backs of so many who voted for him.
Condi must be kvelling. And now, with Hussein and his gang? And Shrillary as Sec. of State? Susan Rice as UN rep is a known Jew hater...and Hanoi John will be the new chairman of Senate's foreign relations panel? IIRC, Rice is a Kerry protege.
I thought Bush was a friend...a very big error on my part.
How could he? Just how could he?
He has left a legacy that our grandkids will have to deal with, and that Hussein will only outdo.
For Israel? I don't even want to imagine what will be.
I've found a new purpose for all my old shoes gathering dust in the closet.
Let us do what we can so the Atzat Hashem should be in our favor, and He Tah'kum.
Sanctions? The world is going to impose sanctions on Israel if the Jewish State does not kvell and commit national suicide? I can hardly think which is worse: strangulation or the bullet. Then again, that's not much of a choice there, is it?
I think the time has come for the Israeli government to say no to this insane idea. And if they use force, let them.
Findalis - the problem is that the Israeli governement is still led by Olmert who is partly responsible for this mess in the first place.
Olmert would love nothing more than to F**k Israel in general and his successor in particular.
Lest you think that Netanyahu will put a stop to the nonsene, he will continue singing the Annapolis tune right up until the elections because he will think that it will make Kadima voters flock to Likud.
He is wrong, but don't expect any resistence from him either.
As for Livni, she is Olmert-lite and she will go along with any grand diplomatic f**cking as she has shown in her short time in government. Recall that UNSC Res 1701 was her idea.
Sadly Israel is once again at the mercy of a US president and a Kapo Jew.
