It's official: Israel going to new elections
Israeli President Shimon Peres announced today that he is dissolving the Knesset. New elections are going to be held sometime between late January and mid-February."This Knesset session opens during both internal and external crises which arouse immense concern in the hearts of every citizen. The difficult process that concludes with the end of the government determines new questions, which concern every home in Israel," Peres said at the beginning of his speech. All parties told Peres they support new elections except for the Gil Pensioners' Party, which polls indicate will not make the minimum threshold to return to the Knesset.
"Faith in the ability of governing institutions has weakened, and more so, has the public's faith in its elected officials. We must not hide this unpleasant truth… This is the hour in which the Israeli Knesset and the political systems must undertake heavy self examination. It is never too late to repair."

Tzipi Livni now has to convince voters she has what takes to be Prime Minister when she couldn't convince Kadima to get completely behind her. For an empty suit, its her biggest challenge.
