Syria seeks IAEA Board of Governors seat

Syria is seeking a seat on the IAEA's Board of Governors. The significance of this move is that the Board is the body that decides whether to sanction countries for violating the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty and the Board makes its decisions by consensus. Thus a Syrian presence on the Board could give the Syrians an effective veto over whether the Syrians get sanctioned for building the Al-Kibar nuclear plant that Israel destroyed in September.

Some of you may recall that just a few days after Israel attacked the Al-Kibar plant, Syria was elected Vice Chairman of the IAEA. Anyone want to bet they'll lose the Board of Governors election? I don't.
