How Hamas is spending its summer vacation
Shin Bet (General Security Service) chief Yuval Diskin updated the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Tuesday regarding how Hamas is spending its summer vacation with a 'truce' in Gaza.
It's not pretty.
Speaking at the weekly meeting of the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Diskin said the organization has rockets that can reach Kiryat Gat, and possibly Ashdod.
Diskin repeated his opposition to the truce, saying Hamas has benefited from it, as it has enabled the group to build itself up and reinforce itself. He said that, despite Israeli demands, arms-smuggling into Gaza has continued unabated and has not seen any decrease, with large amounts of weaponry being brought into the territory on a regular basis.
He added that Hamas has an interest in maintaining the calm at this time, in order to strengthen its hold on Gaza.
The Shin Bet chief said that in order to effectively combat terrorism in Gaza, Israel needs troop presence on the ground inside the territory. He mentioned the dramatic decrease in terror emanating from the West Bank in recent years due to heavy IDF presence in the region and ongoing operations there. This, he said, was also needed in order to quell terror attacks from Gaza.
Asked by MK Yisrael Katz about his opinion on the possible release of Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti as part of a prisoner exchange with Hamas, Diskin said he was opposed to such a move.
But the Olmert-Barak-Livni-Yishai government continues to pat itself on the back because things are 'quiet' while ignoring the reality going on around it.

Israel's leaders are a bunch of cowards and moral idiots. That's the most charitable thing one can say about their attitude to the danger that menaces the country.
Any 'peace' that is ever achieved will be temporary - a hudna at best. Abu Mazen and Fatah are place holders. Once they burn through the billions they have buying Jews out of Jerusalem and buying up weapons 'legally' from the quartet, the same thing that happened in Gaza will happen in the West Bank. Olmert and the West aren't strengthening Abbas, they're doing Hamas' work for them. Mashaal has to be the happiest man in the Middle East.
