As close as he's going to get

For now, at least this is about as close as Israel's Prime Minister Ehud K. Olmert is likely to get to Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad. Notice who is chasing after whom.

Former Chairman of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee and current Likud faction chairman Yuval Steinitz got it almost right:
"What happened in Paris yesterday was shameful," Steinitz said. "The prime minister and the foreign minister were both running after the Syrian dictator to try and shake his hand. Their behavior humiliated the state of Israel and the entire Jewish people."
Olmert is such a putz I don't feel humiliated by anything he does any more. Just disgusted. He doesn't represent me. He's not my Prime Minister. He's a decadent and despicable crook and an incompetent 'leader,' and the sooner we can send him to Paris permanently, the better. As to Livni, she's not a crook, but she may be even less competent than Olmert.

Israelis have long to ceased to care about their politicians' behavior. There's a sense of apathy and resignation in the country. Now there's a report Ehud Olmert had siphoned cash from charities for his own benefit. No one seems to pay for their misdeeds and no one in Israel is surprised to find the Prime Minister chasing after the Syrian dictator for a handshake.

I think it is the other way around. The behavior of Assad and Mubarak is shameful. They demonstrate themselves as uncivilized... just like the kerfluffle caused in Iraq by a handshake between Ehud Barak and some Iraqi minister at some conference. Israelis look good by working toward engagement.
