Electioneering, Egyptian style: What a difference a month makes

Just last month, Egyptian 'culture' minister Faruq Hosni said that if he found any Israeli books in a library in Egypt, he would burn them (Hat Tip: Sons of Apes and Pigs). But Hosni is now a candidate to become the chairman of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and he is suddenly singing a different tune. On Tuesday, Hosni said that he 'dreams' of 'normal ties' with Israel, once it makes 'peace' with the 'Palestinian Authority.' And you thought that Egypt had normal ties with Israel since it made with Israel in 1979 and got all of the Sinai down to the last square inch, didn't you?

But Hosni has a rather lengthy and unsavory record that ought to spell the end of his candidacy. You see, Mr. Hosni has been Egypt's minister of culture for 21 years, which is no short period of time.
During Hosni's 21 years as culture minister, just a few Israeli works have been translated into Arabic, and a total boycott is imposed on all artists and intellectuals from Israel. No Israeli film has ever been shown in the country.
Do you think it will matter to anyone at the UN? I doubt it.

In fact, that record will commend him to the anti-Israel crowd that runs the UN. You can't get promoted more than how much your demonstrate your antipathy to the Jewish State at the UN. Hosni Farouq's works are mainly for Western consumption. Not that any one else cares about his country's hostility,. despite the existence of a formal peace treaty, to all things having to do with the Jewish State.
