Egypt boycotts Israeli soccer team

I guess the Egyptians would rather quit than fight.

An Egyptian soccer team which included diplomats from the country who are stationed in Rome decided to boycott a soccer tournament after a lottery determined that they would play an Israeli soccer team consisting of Israeli diplomats and embassy personnel stationed in Rome.
Twenty countries from all across the globe are taking part in the international tournament, scheduled to begin Saturday, including Algeria, Morocco and Egypt.

The raffle held on May 17 determined that Israel would play against three teams – Spain, Egypt and an international team which does not belong to a certain country.

On Wednesday, the organizers informed the Israeli Embassy that the Egyptians had decided to quit the tournament due to the results of the raffle.
Israel and Egypt signed a peace treaty in 1979 and have been at 'peace' since then. Because of that treaty, Egypt is the third largest recipient of American foreign aid after Israel and Iraq.

Despite a formal peace treaty, the Egyptians still hate Israel. And Ehud Olmert wants Israelis to believed a signed peace treaty with Damascus would warm up Israel's de facto cold peace with that country. Yeah, right. Israel's de jure peace with Egypt has resulted in an Egyptian soccer team boycotting the Jews.

the reason is that they are too afraid to risk losing to the zionist entity, which would result in shame, embarrassment, and derision from fellow muslims for years to come. in their (small) minds, the face-saving move is to act all principled and pious by saying that they can't participate something where they are on the same pitch/equal terms with the hated enemy (hence giving the jewish state ANY sort of legitimacy. you know, egypt's glory legitimizes and enhances anyone who comes into it's holy presence).

true, it's hard to tell if they are bigger cowards or hate-mongers, but methinks they are bigger cowards.
