Diskin: Hamas can hit Ashdod

General Security Services Chief Avi Diskin told the cabinet today that Hamas has rockets in its possession with which it can already hit Ashdod, and maybe even Kiryat Gat too.
Hamas likely possesses rockets capable of reaching areas beyond Ashkelon, perhaps as far as Ashdod and Kiryat Gat, Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) chief Yuval Diskin said Sunday at the weekly cabinet meeting.

"It is only a matter of time" before these cities are hit, Diskin said.

The Shin Bet chief added that Hamas was tightening its ties with Iran, and said that some of the rockets being used by the group were Iranian made. "The scale of the threat against Israel is growing," he stated.

Diskin went on to say that Hamas had managed to smuggle high quality weaponry into the Strip following the breach of the Rafah border with Egypt in January.

"Hamas already has considerable abilities and possesses hundreds of rockets with a range of 20 kilometers. If the issue is not addressed, Hamas will have additional cities within its range," he said.

Diskin was not optimistic over the prospect of a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, saying he believed "the chances for calm are very slim" due to the gaps between the sides.
Ashdod is Israel's second largest port after Haifa. It is also within daily commuting distance of Tel Aviv.

Will the government act? Israel Radio reported that Diskin told the cabinet that acting may - God forbid - cost many soldiers their lives. Still, there is really not much choice. The government has waited too long to act already. The cost of acting may now be much higher.

Carl - I guess the only thing that might wake up the bozos running Israel is if their property gets hit by Hamas rockets. Either that or its going to take a massive bloodbath to prod an indifferent government in ordering a major operation in Gaza.
