Al-Jazeera Magazine Poll: Is Killing Shalit Justified?

Al-Jazeera is running a poll on its magazine web site that asks the following question:
If Israel didn't turn over Palestinian prisoners or end Gaza offensive, would killing its soldier Shalit be justified?
The good news is that 86% say no. (Usual caveats about online polls being self-selecting).

Thanks for the hat tip, Carl.

A few people emailed me to say that it is worthless, on Al Jazeera, but the number of 'no' votes is impressive. I am somewhat surprised to see that the poll is still up.

Meanwhile? Gil Shalit and the other 2 IDF are still captives, and his parents seemed less than convinced with the 'letter'....as the Yomin Tovim approach, it is especially heartbreaking.

Nana,

The problem is that the only talk of releasing any of these guys is in exchange for terrorists. You and I are both old enough to remember the days when Israel didn't negotiate with terrorists. That's where Entebbe came from. Today, we'd be negotiating with them. I think we were better off the old way. The next kidnapping is being prepared even as you and I type.

Carl,

Sitting here in NY, I can be heard in another state if the wind is right, when I see yet another article in the Israeli online papers re an 'exchange'...the release of even 1 terrorist is too many. It just is not comprehendible, and IMHO the current Israeli government is an unmitigated disaster. Israel already is being perceived as weak here, and all over, and in the MSM, and when friends and family talk about it? The most conservative, and even most LLL's are aghast. It is easy to sit here in the States and put in our 2 cents worth, though, but only Israelis have a right to influence the government.

Yes, I remember Israel before Barak, Sharon, Peres, and Olmert. I was 10 when the UN declared Israel to be a State, as if that was necessary..and I sadly agree that the next kidnapping is indeed being prepared as we type..and Yom Kippur is in my mind for the last, as I recall 1973. It will also be ramadan.

Once Israel treads the path of appeasement and releasing terrorists in an exchange? I honestly do not know what it will lead to. I have ideas, but as Erev Rosh HaShahah approaches? 'Let a year and its curses end, Let a year and its blessings begin.'
