Israel asks Italy to head UN 'peacekeeping force'

Israel has now asked Italy to head the UN 'peacekeeping force' in Lebanon.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert also asked Italy to deploy troops to oversee Lebanon's border with Syria, which Israel says is smuggling arms to Hezbullah.

A statement issued by Olmert's office said that in a telephone conversation with Olmert, Italian Premier Romano Prodi said his country intended to send a "significant military force."

In an interview with Rome daily Il Messaggero published Sunday, a leader of Prodi's coalition said Italy would be willing to lead the proposed 15,000-member force if asked by the United Nations.

Hopefully, the Italians will be armed with better weapons than this Genu-wine French Army knife (Hat Tip: J O S H U A P U N D I T)

I hope Italy won't mess Israel over. The Italian foreign minister called Israel a 'terrorist state'.

I wrote more about it in my blog http://peoplesmedia.blogspot.com/2006/08/italy-to-lead-un-lebanon-security.html
