Israel rejects ultimatum

No surprises here. Israel has rejected the ultimatum it got this morning from the three Palestinian terrorist groups who are holding Gilad Shalit.

"We will not conduct any negotiations on the release of prisoners. Israel will not give in to extortion by the Palestinian Authority and the Hamas government, which are led by murderous terrorist organizations ... The PA bears full responsibility for the welfare of Gilad Shalit and for returning him safe and sound to Israel."

On the other hand, Defense Minister Comrade Peretz blames Syria (which actually may be in more of a position to help on this than the PA). At a Labor faction meeting at the Knesset, Peretz said (in a statement which sounded eerily like something Ehud Barak could have said):

"We suggest that (Syrian President Bashar) Assad, who is trying to close his eyes, open his eyes because he is responsible. We will know how to strike those who are involved."
