Palestinian Civil War Watch - Fatah deploys new militia in Samaria

Mahmoud Abbas Abu Mazen's Fatah has deployed a new 2500-member 'security force' in Jenin on Saturday, in answer to Hamas' 3000-member force that was deployed over Abu Mazen's objections last month. Hamas spokescritters were not available for comment.

According to al-AP, more than 2,000 members of the new unit held a rally in Jenin on Saturday morning, wearing black T-shirts emblazoned with "Special Protection Unit" on the back, and a photo of Yasser Arafat on the front. Some 60 to 70 were armed with assault rifles, and several dozens carried pistols. I guess Fatah cannot afford AK-47's these days :-)

Saturday's deployment of the militia was intended to drive home the message that unless Hamas disbands its new force, Fatah will create parallel units across the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Fatah officials said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose policy to the press.

Abu Mazen has also said that he will not visit Gaza until the Hamas force is disbanded. Something tells me he's afraid of what will happen to him if he does visit there.

Civil war coming? I wish both sides good luck so long as they stay out of Israel.

Read the whole thing.
