Rice: No replacement for Wolfensohn

Yesterday I reported that the 'quartet' would be meeting to decide whether to replace their envoy for Middle East diplomacy, James Wolfensohn. But according to US Secretary of State Condaleeza Rice, in a statement released late last night, Wolfensohn is not going to be replaced right now:

“If we believed that conditions were such that a special envoy could really do his work at this particular time, we wouldn’t be seeking a replacement — Jim Wolfensohn, I hope, would be staying,” Rice said Monday at Wolfensohn’s farewell at the State Department.

“And so that’s why there isn’t a replacement.”

As I noted in my post yesterday, the failure to name a replacement for Wolfensohn may signify the end of the 'road map.'
