Rabbis arrested for organizing sun blessing

As some of you may have noticed in the comments, Wednesday is a once-in-28-year event for Jews: Birkas (or Birkat) HaChammah, blessing the sun. You can find more details about it here.

In New York City, 112 years ago (in 1897), two Orthodox Rabbis were arrested for organizing Birkas HaChammah without a permit! Here's the story from the New York Times (if you have trouble viewing it, click on the image or you can find the original here):

My how times have changed (hopefully)?

Times have definitely changed. Note just how anti-police and pro-rabbi the Times is in its discussions of Officer Foley. They would never be that pro-rabbi today.

They have changed. A Jew who speaks little good English trying to explain to an Irish cop what Bircas HaChammah means because its such a rare ritual! Such a story couldn't be reported today.

1 Christian girl sending love out to all Jewish people. Fell crazy in love with a Jewish guy years ago. We are not together but my thoughts are always with him. I was raised without a negative thought for anyone of any other religion and cannot understand the craziness and the anger. Nothing is more important than inter-religious communication and action to help bring about world peace. We must teach the children peace and love.
