Condi's in Israel to b**ch and moan?

If this report from France 24 is taken at face value, it seems that US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is here to complain about Israel's 'failure' to do enough to keep the 'Palestinians' happy. For example, 'only' 44 out of 61 roadblocks (out of the 50 Israel promised to dismantle) have been dismantled since last March. And Israel is allegedly continuing 'settlement activity' at least in those areas that it envisions keeping in a 'settlement' with the 'Palestinians.' Let's go to the videotape and then I'll have more comments.

I find this video hard to believe. First, while Bush and Rice cannot say so publicly, it is clear that there will be no 'settlement' between Israel and the 'Palestinians' while Bush is in office or at any time in the foreseeable future. In fact, it is clear that to some extent, Bush and Rice back Israel's position on the contours of future borders if a 'settlement' is ever reached. My view is that Rice's visit is all for show, and that at most we will see an Oslo-type declaration of principles before Bush's term ends in January 2009.

If there is even a settlement on principles. Not when one party - the Palestinians - do not accept Israel's very existence. I remind you again, Carl - the boycott of Israel's birthday celebration this week was instigated not by Hamas but by the "moderate" PA President Mahmoud Abbas. Even Condi's pressure on Israel can go so far in the absence of a genuine partner on the other side. There isn't one.
