Abu Mazen himself to honor Sbarro terrorist; Livni approves?

This one sets a new standard for depravity. One week before he is due to meet President Bush in Washington, if this doesn't convince President Bush that 'moderate' 'Palestinian' President Mahmoud Abbas Abu Mazen is not a 'peace partner,' nothing will.
The Al Kuds Mark of Honor, the PLO's highest medal, will be given to two female terrorists who helped kill Israelis, Israel Radio reported Wednesday.

Ahlam Tamimi [pictured. CiJ], a Hamas affiliate serving a life sentence for driving the suicide bomber who exploded himself in the Sbarro restaurant in Jerusalem, killing at least half a dozen people [fifteen to be exact, plus one woman still in an apparently irreversible coma. CiJ], including a whole family and Amra Muna, who seduced [seventeen-year old. CiJ] Ophir Rahum over the Internet and then lured him to Ramallah where he was murdered, will both be awarded the medal.

Conferring the Al Kuds Mark of Honor is decided at the discretion of the Palestinian Authority's president, and he alone has the final say when choosing the Palestinians to be honored with the medal. [Please read that sentence again - I want it to sink in. The award was determined by Abu Mazen and Abu Mazen alone. No excuses. CiJ]

Palestinian Minister for Prisoner Affairs Ashraf el Ajami told Israel Radio that his ministry gave PA President Mahmoud Abbas a comprehensive list of prisoners and his office chose the nominees from this list.

Ajami refused to confirm that the medal would be given to Tamimi and Muna, saying that he didn't want to "ruin the surprise" for the families attending the ceremony scheduled for Thursday.

Abbas himself was en route to Russia and his staff refused to comment on the report.
And the reaction from Israel?
Likud MK Gideon Sa'ar said the report was "troubling and severe" news, but added that if the report were true, it would continue a recent history of doublespeak from Abbas, which, Sa'ar said, presented different Palestinian intentions and narratives when speaking to Arab crowds and when addressing Western diplomats.

Sa'ar mentioned a recent article where Abbas - Israel's Palestinian peace partner - hinted that a return to armed struggle might be in the benefit of the Palestinian cause.
Actually Saar had more to say than that, but JPost chose not to publish it. Here's the rest.
MK Gideon Saar, the Likud Knesset faction chairman, said in response, "This is an additional proof of the true stance of Abu Mazen. Israel must call off all diplomatic talks with the Palestinian Authority under his leadership."

"We should not be expected to encourage and praise those who praise our murderers," Saar said. "Abbas makes sure to create for himself in the West an image of one who is moderate, while his true character is revealed among his own people. The government of Israel must wake up and respond appropriately, instead of granting him armored cars and removing checkpoints."
But don't expect the despicable dhimmis running the Israeli government to 'respond appropriately:'
That the government of Israel does not agree with Saar was evidenced not only by its ongoing talks with Abbas and his representatives, but also by recent remarks by Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni. Speaking at the Doha Forum in Qatar this week, Livni said that Israel is negotiating "with the pragmatic Palestinians, who recognize Israel's right to exist, who seek to realize their national rights but choose the path of peace over terrorism. With such partners, who support the two-state solution, peace can be attained. The conflict is solvable."

Analyst Dr. Aaron Lerner (IMRA) commented, "Once again, FM Livni tells the world that the PA leadership is simply fantastic - setting the stage for the world to blame Israel for any problems" that are likely to arise in the future.

Carl - and everyone else - Try to get this item and Saar's comments posted everywhere possible. I'll do my bit. It needs visibility and hit the main web channels. How much longer can Condi/Bush/Olmert/Livni continue this charade?

Is,

I sent this post to eight of the big blogs. So far, only one has taken it and they took it from someone else who is not in Israel. But the day is just starting.

I agree with commenter ls, this story deserves to be a headliner everywhere, juxtaposed with photos of the grisly Sbarro's scene and Mahmoud Abbas. Nothing could more persuasively convey to the uninformed American public that Abbas and Fatah are not moderate, that the Annapolis process is absurd and immoral. And the timing of this award should be noted as well!

As for Livni in Doha, her comments were ridiculous. Qatar is home to Qaradawi, and everyone knows what he's had to say about democracy--and it doesn't agree w/Livni! The Omani Minister of Foreign Affairs said "We do not agree with their [Livini's} opinions" and that the meeting was "not meant to have a result."

Look guys, nomatter what we do to publicize this, it's what the govt of ISRAEL does with it that counts.

Do you think ANYONE over here not with our interest level has a clue that SAMIR QUNTAR is a hero for what he did, or WHO HE IS?

Olmert and Livni, and Barak should be brandishing pictures of these killers, and the pally Sbarro museum before them every second.

No quote from them should get by without mentioning this.

But it is not going to be that way, IS IT?

Talking to those who honor those who murdered Jewish children... it doesn't say much about Abbas, from whom such behavior is rightly expected but it does say a lot about Israel's leaders, for whom Jewish lives are not the highest value in their own eyes.

epaminondas, not just the GOI but the Annapolis-pushing U.S. government. What else can change either government's approach? The public. Talking out loud here, but with the liberal blogs hating the Bush-Condi foreign policy, perhaps it's time to reconsider our alliances. No, the Left is not our friend in general, but they've got some hugely popular blogs and they might be willing to publicize the hypocrisy and lie of the U.S. pushing Abbas as a moderate as he's honoring these terrorists.

Orde, FORGET IT.

I'm in the USA.
Thinking jewish people understand what Condi-W-Cheney have abandoned This is not a right left issue.

Bush uttered the words "Islamic Fascism" JUST ONCE. Americans while they support Israel strongly don't undertsand there is no difference between the Muslims Brotherhood-HAMAS-Al Qaeda.

The jewish 'progressives' here are my the hardest to move when it comes to seeing that Israel is a part of the war against all these bastards.

They are no help. One of them, a leader told me that withdrawal from Gaza was a trick to show the pal's would rocket Israel to keep the west bank.

Forget the left here, they are venomous fools.

epaminondas, your point is actually my point -- it is precisely because Americans (and nonMuslims in general) do not understand or sufficiently understand distinctives or similarities between MB, Al-Qaeda, Wahhabism/Salafism, Hamas, Fatah, Hizbullah, Shias in general, etc. that we have (1) on the downside, an unwillingness on the right to criticize the Bush-McCain approach, as we cling to the neocon strengthen-the-"moderates" plan for no other reason than trusting in the good intentions of the neocons behind it, and (2) on the upside, perhpas we could find willingness on the left (as in HuffPo or Daily Kos) to expose the Abbas-is-NO-moderate-but-a-terrorist truth because they have no problem with ridiculing Bush-McCain foreign policy.

On the positive, I did come across an inspirational blogpost about the power of the pen used by a Righteous Gentile (Sugihara) during the Holocaust. "All he did was sit down and write."

I, too, am in the US (Florida), and not only will I not forget the Left (for it is composed of individuals), but I will vote for Obama if McCain doesn't drop out or change his approach to Israel and the war on terror.

UPDATE: "Abbas: Awards to terrorists have been revoked"(JPost).

Carl, as the previous commenter notes, there's a report this morning that Abbas has "revoked" (whatever that means) the award. However his, and the PA's, barely-concealed hypocrisy and double-speak are out there on display for anyone who cares to read.

I am a parent of one of the children murdered in Sbarro Jerusalem massacre. This is why I pay more than the usual interest in what’s said about the killer. So I feel the need to react when I see a news report (the Jerusalem Post report that is the sole source for this reporting about the award) saying “The two were Ahlam Tamimi, a Hamas affiliate serving a life sentence for driving the suicide bomber who exploded himself in the Sbarro restaurant in Jerusalem, killing at least half a dozen people…”

Fifteen people were murdered at Sbarro that day. Technically that's “at least half a dozen” but most would see it as an odd way to express the toll. A sixteenth victim, a young mother, has been lying unconscious from that day until now. My daughter Malka Chana Roth , 15, was among those killed. 130 people were maimed and injured. That’s my first point.

The second is that, notwithstanding the Jerusalem Post’s report describing the murderous young woman as the driver, she wasn’t.

Calling her the driver gives the impression of someone relatively marginal to this barbaric slaughter. In fact, as the court that tried and convicted her found, this young woman personally engineered the massacre, procured the explosives, and accompanied the walking bomb-person from Samaria, via the Ramallah-area checkpoint crossing, into Jerusalem and right up to Sbarro. After the explosion, she coolly made her way back to Ramallah where she personally presented the evening news on PA television, including a report on the deaths she had herself caused to happen.
