Another piece of solving the 'housing crisis'
Here's another thing we can do to free up some government money to deal with our 'housing crisis': Cut the number of government ministers. Chairman of the Movement for quality of Government Eli Sulam calls upon the PM and the ministers to declare that they are reducing the government to 18 ministers. This is to save tens of millions of shekels that can be diverted to public needs. “The government should set an example,” says Sulam. He's right. Every government minister costs a couple of million shekels per year, including the cost of an office, office staff, a Volvo (they go for more than $50K apiece in this country), a driver....
Other parliaments with more than 120 members have 13-20 ministers. The Israeli government has 40 ministers and deputy-ministers.
I am sure the government will agree with this. But none of the 40+ ministers and deputy ministers will agree to give up their positions for the overall good of the public. And if God forbid Kadima comes in, it will only increase the numbers.
Meanwhile, we keep paying more than half our income in taxes.
What could go wrong?
