Israel's coming civil war
In other news, Rabbi Aaron Leib Steinman has called for a mass prayer rally against the government (link in Hebrew). And an online poll taken at a Haredi website in the aftermath of the Supreme Court decision to stop all fund transfers to yeshivas finds that 47% want to raise funding for the yeshivas outside the government, 25% are calling for civil rebellion, 20% want to send all the slackers to the army, and just 8% say that while it's forbidden to maintain any contact with the Zionists, it's also forbidden to use violence. The latter view is probably the closest to that of the Haredi leadership.
Ouch.
By the way, if the real goal is to get the Haredim to go out to work (which is what Naftali Bennett claims), the fastest way to do it is to (a) drop the army from the picture and (b) find them jobs.

Carl, what you fail to state and is critically important is that many (not all) Haredim are simply unfit for work. When Haredi education is so abysmal as to fail to teach even the most basic life skills, how exactly are Haredim supposed to work?
The truth is that the real problem is in the heinous Haredi school system. It would be extremely difficult to change this. So what is the alternative? Try to acclimate Haredim to the outside world and gain skills through the army. This ultimately makes Haredim more employable.
I would think you would be a big advocate for Haredim serving in the army and I am continually perplexed as to why you, as a Zionist, are not.
Carl has pointed out before that the real aim of the Israeli Left is to destroy Torah Judaism - not to equalize the service burden through reasonable accommodation.
And if the draft was the real issue, the proper step to take would be to abolish it and create a professional volunteer army. No one would have to be coerced to serve and lots of young people would sign up not only to defend the country but to better their lives.
Of course this is exactly what is not happening in Israel.
I'd like to stop all subsidies for everyone and everything, get the Israeli government out of our pockets and then everyone can choose what to do with their lives and figure out how they can afford it.
As for the IDF, I'm all for Moshe Feiglin's idea of a professional volunteer IDF. However, in the interim, I'm all for giving the Haredi community 2-4 years to draft and build a Haredi military program, complete with all time Torah shifts, 100% modesty and Badatz Eida Haredit run kitchens. The "Torah World" should have volunteered to do this when the State was formed.
If that's not good enough for them, then they should get nothing for giving nothing. Enough's enough!
