No, no, they've got it all wrong! Jews are "sons of apes and pigs", whereas we Christians are "those who incur Allah's wrath".** What a dilemma! I believe that's called a "Hobson's Choice". A dilemma of competing equally unattractive options. (Slang phrase based on a wonderful comedy play by English playwright Harold Brighouse).
They made a terrific movie about this, with the same name, directed by David Lean in 1954. Some wonderful English actors at their best, including Charles Laughton as the late 19th century English delightfully rude drunkard shoe shop owner, widower Henry Hobson, with his three unmarried daughters. I give this terrific movie a 5 Star Recommend. Hilarious and at the same time, touching, with a love story between the eldest of Hobson's three daughters, intelligent, iron-willed daughter Maggie and "lowly" shoemaker Will Mossop, a talented but seemingly very unspectacular shoemaker employee with the proverbial heart of gold, played by a young John Mills.
This is just a tiny bit reminiscent of "Fiddler on the Roof", except of course Tevye was a respectable Jewish dairy farmer, a sober, very industrious man, a non-widower, with three unmarried, marriage-age daughters. Wonderful, heart-warming movie, with a terrific musical score! "If I were a rich man...", "Tradition!" The tailor the eldest daughter married, also with a heart of gold, is reminiscent of the goy bootmaker, also with a heart of gold, that Hobson's eldest daughter married.
**Actually, as we know, not the Lord God, Sovereign Lord of the Universe, that Jews and Christians worship, but "Allah" is historically based on the pagan moon god that Arabian Peninsula Arabs worshiped prior to the birth of Mo in the 7th century. (No, not Moe of Curly, Larry, Moe, three of my favorite guys. [For some reason, I never did care for Shemp too much; but the trio of Curly, Larry and Moe were perfect! Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk! :-)
(Another bit of Hollywood trivia for another comment at another time. The Three Stooges should have been Kennedys, with their, um, gender, doing most of their thinking. Quite a hilarious story when they as an up and coming comedy team, were introduced to the elegant, exquisitely beautiful already superstar, Greer Garson! :-)
I am an Orthodox Jew - some would even call me 'ultra-Orthodox.' Born in Boston, I was a corporate and securities attorney in New York City for seven years before making aliya to Israel in 1991 (I don't look it but I really am that old :-). I have been happily married to the same woman for thirty-five years, and we have eight children (bli ayin hara) ranging in age from 13 to 33 years and nine grandchildren. Four of our children are married! Before I started blogging I was a heavy contributor on a number of email lists and ran an email list called the Matzav from 2000-2004.
