Have Hamas and Islamic Jihad reached a unity agreement
In January, Hamas’ Ismail Haniyeh called for
integration” between Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Shortly thereafter, Islamic
Jihad’s Khader Habib also called
full integration between the two factions.
Then, in early March, the Secretary-General of Islamic
Shallah, said that unity talks
with Hamas were “new,” but that he
hoped the results would be “positive and favorable.” A couple weeks later,
Islamic Jihad’s Muhammad al-Hindi said that merger
talks with Hamas
were "ongoing and positive." According
to al-Hindi one of the main purposes of the merger would be “to strengthen
the Palestinian resistance.”
Reports of cooperation and unity agreements between the two
groups then went unreported for months.
