Guess who may become Secretary of Defense

President Obama's second term may include some cabinet reshuffling, and guess who might become Secretary of Defense.... Yes, Chuck Hagel.
Many believe that current Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is only going to stay on as long as he has to, and sources say candidates for replacing him are already being discussed.
Chuck Hagel, former Republican senator from Nebraska and good  friend of the President’s, is being mentioned as a top candidate according to Politico.
But the prospect of Hagel in such a high-level position would be a cause for concern for the state of Israel seeing as he has a history of castigating the Jewish state while also downplaying the threat of its enemies.
“He is one of the most hostile critics of Israel that has ever been in the Senate,” Morton Klein, President of the Zionist Organization of America told The Algemeiner.
“There is only a handful of senators that have been openly hostile to Israel and Chuck Hagel is one of them,” he added.
It's much worse than that. In 2009 and 2010, Hagel was discussed as a replacement for Bob Gates. He didn't get the job then. After all, Obama still had to stand for reelection. In 2011, Hagel was chosen to chair the Intelligence Advisory Board. In each case, people who care about Israel opposed Hagel's nomination.

I suppose it could be worse. Obama could choose this guy.

I saw him speak once at Brookings in D.C. Can't remember what the issues were, but I remember thinking I lived on a different planet than those people. Which is probably true.

American policy toward Israel hasn't changed in 50 years. The only two problems since Independence have been Eisenhower in 1956 and Nixon in 1973. And both were Republicans. Your complaint about Powell is strange given that he was George W. Bush's Secretary of State.

Errrrrrrrr, not Colin Powell.

A better choice than Chuck Hagel, would be Samantha Power.
