Why the 'Palestinian' non-state member gambit at the UN might work

The 'Palestinians' have announced this week that they will apply for non-state member status at the United Nations in the fall. This requires only a General Assembly vote - no US veto in the Security Council.

Israel Radio reports that the 'Palestinians' are hoping to have the vote take place between the US elections and year end.

The only chance to stop this gambit from succeeding is if (a) Mitt Romney wins and (b) Mitt Romney announces that if the UN votes 'Palestine' in as a non-member state, all United States funding to the United Nations will be cut off (and maybe also that the United Nations will have to find a new home, although that's a bit more complicated due to treaty obligations).

If President Obama is reelected, God forbid, it appears likely that the 'Palestinian' gambit will succeed and that they will become a non-member state of the United Nations.

What could go wrong?
