I looked up Gilbert Stuart and found some interesting history. This portrait of Washington wasn't completed because at the time, so many Americans wanted copies that Stuart occupied all his time painting as many as he could, at $100 a copy. Needless to say, $100 was a helluva lot of money in the 1790s.
