Israel's new tank shells

Over the next few weeks, the IDF will take delivery of the M339 tank shell, which is designed to penetrate reinforced targets before exploding inside them.
In an effort to improve its ability to accurately target terrorists hiding inside homes, the IDF will receive new tank shells developed to penetrate reinforced targets in the coming weeks.

Such a capability is believed to be crucial for the IDF as it faces future conflicts with Hezbollah and Hamas, both terrorist groups which embed themselves within civilian infrastructure, according to the military.

Called M339, the new 120 mm. shell was developed by Israel Military Industries together with the IDF Ground Forces Command. It can be fired by Merkava Mk 3 and Mk 4 tanks at extended ranges. The shell explodes only after it penetrates a target and then releases thousands of lethal fragments.
Hmmm.

Hope the IDF uses up it's incoming inventory in quick order.

Better a reorder in asap...

Can we say "target rich environment"

Ugh. I know they are needed. And, likewise, I hope the IDF has a very strict accounting system for them. I think I remember in summer '06 in southern Leb, one of the worst IDF killers was anti-tank shells. I think they are pretty small for the punch they have and Hezbollah ground guys fired them at IDF guys. Just thinking of it causes me nausea. I know they get them from Russia and several other places, but I hope the IDF makes really sure they don't get them out the back doors of any IDF warehouses.
