And you thought Generals were supposed to be smart

And you thought Generals were supposed to be smart.

Former Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, James Cartwright, trots out the Obama administration's latest excuse for inaction on Iran. Get this: Iran can't be stopped because they'll be able to rebuild eventually. No kidding.
“If they have the intent, all the weapons in the world are not going to change that, because the knowledge is there and they’d just build it back,” said retired Gen. James Cartwright, who served as the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff until last year, about what would happen should the US use force to take out the Iranian program.

Speaking at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Cartwright also said that, should Israel attack, the country “can delay it, some people estimate two to five years. But that does not take away the intellectual capital. That does not take away the ability of the Iranians to then proliferate the sites.”

Cartwright said he didn’t “see a lot of value in going in,” particularly since an attack was likely merely to galvanize Iran to redouble its efforts, and suggested that his feeling was widespread throughout the US military.
Well, duh. Even if you bomb them back to the Stone Age (or the 8th century), they could rebuild eventually - in a few hundred years and at great expense.

The whole point of bombing them is to delay them, to make it expensive enough that maybe they'll give it up, and maybe to kill some of that 'intellectual capital.' If they decide to rebuild, they can rebuild, but it might take a lot of years and it will take a lot of money. And they might decide not to rebuild or not be able to rebuild. Iraq didn't rebuild and neither has Syria.

Any wonder why this guy was passed over for Chairman of the Joint Chiefs after being the lead candidate?

Oh - and get this:
Cartwright acknowledged that it was possible that speaking openly about opposition to a military attack could erode the credible threat of force underpinning diplomacy with Iran, but said such a scenario was improbable because of the ambiguity Iran would perceive in US thinking.
And you thought Generals were smart.

Don't forget that active duty US military officers can only publicly speak along the lines of official policy. More specifically, this general is parroting the position of the politicians to whom US officers must report and from whom they must take their orders.

You don't get to be a 4 star general by being stupid. I'm sure he's well aware that he's speaking nonsense.
