Obama's really scared Israel will attack Iran

The Wall Street Journal describes what can best be called panic in Washington over the possibility that Israel will attack Iran's nuclear facilities.
The U.S. military is preparing for a number of possible responses to an Israeli strike, including assaults by pro-Iranian Shiite militias in Iraq against the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, according to U.S. officials.

The U.S. believes its embassy and other diplomatic outposts in Iraq are more vulnerable following the withdrawal of U.S. forces last month. Up to 15,000 U.S. diplomats, federal employees and contractors are expected to remain in Iraq.

In large measure to deter Iran, the U.S. has 15,000 troops in Kuwait, and has moved a second aircraft carrier strike group to the Persian Gulf area.

It has also been pre-positioning aircraft and other military equipment, officials say. Arms transfers to key allies in the Gulf, including the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, have been fast-tracked as a further deterrent, officials say.

Israeli officials said Mr. Netanyahu's government continues to closely coordinate with the U.S. in responding to the Iranian threat. "Israel believes that heightened sanctions combined with a credible military threat may dissuade the Iranian regime from developing nuclear capabilities," Mr. Oren said.

Mr. Panetta and other top officials have privately sought assurances from Israeli leaders in recent weeks that they won't take military action against Iran. But the Israeli response has been noncommittal, U.S. officials said.

U.S. officials briefed on the military's planning said concern has mounted over the past two years that Israel may strike Iran. But rising tensions with Iran and recent changes at Iranian nuclear sites have ratcheted up the level of U.S. alarm.

"Our concern is heightened," a senior U.S. military official said of the probability of an Israeli strike over U.S. objections.

Tehran crossed at least one of Israel's "red lines" earlier this month when it announced it had begun enriching uranium at the Fordow underground nuclear facility near the holy city of Qom.

The planned closing of Israel's nuclear plant near Dimona this month, which was reported in Israeli media, sounded alarms in Washington, where officials feared it meant Israel was repositioning its own nuclear assets to safeguard them against a potential Iranian counterstrike.
Maybe Obama should have thought about all that before he rushed to order US troops to flee Iraq (yes, that's how it's seen in this part of the world). And maybe he should have instituted real sanctions months ago instead of trying to avoid them. And maybe he should stop handing out exemptions to the 'too little too late' sanctions that Congress instituted over his objections.

Carter is going to lose his title as the worst American President ever. No one has ever screwed up like this.

Why do you think we are waiting? I know the fall-out will be horrendous but we are talking about the regime that funds Hezbollah either using Nukes directly or providing a nuclear umbrella for it's proxies to enact their Nazi-esque policies. Strikes should have been launched against Iran a long time ago now.

Carter lost his title as "Worst President Ever" to Obama with 3 months of Obama's inauguration. Obama's totally feckless spending of $5 trillion, with little in the way of public or Congressional accountability, along with his from-the-get-go end runs around the Constitution, did that. Carter now has to fight it out with Clinton for the title "Worst President of the 20th Century". Carter did some amazingly stupid things but he wasn't personally corrupt, nor inculcate an Administration ethos of corruption as did Clinton. Nor did Carter spit on the Constitution like Obama has done and continues to do on a regular basis. (e.g. Obama's recent spate of "recess appointments" when Congress wasn't legally recessed.)

Obama will probably call in a preemptive airstrike on the Jews, if only to shore up his progressive voter base. And in case you're wondering, it's likely Obama will be re elected and when he is, day one, task one will be to feed to the Jews to Iran wholesale.

Bibi prolly believes Obama's heart of hearts position is to permit Iranian nukes. Actually, Israel may think it's too early to pull the trigger but Obama has proven himself to be snit-prone and unreliable. They could be pulling a Nixon on him, just messing with this head to prevent a lapse into full-blown appeasement sell-out mode. An attack is not likely soon from the outside--if they can arrange for an inside "work accident" another story.
