ADL puts its tail between its legs over Obama comments
Jennifer Rubin reports that the ADL was embarrassed by President Obama's comments about Prime Minister Netanyahu at the G20, which came to light on Tuesday.Obama’s comment put liberal Jews once again in a tight spot. It seems like only last month that the Anti-Defamation League was clucking at citizens to take Israel off the table as a subject of discussion in the 2012 election. But yesterday the ADL trudged back to the topic, obviously glum that Obama had once again revealed himself to be less than a sympathetic friend to Netanyahu and to Israel. A statement read:But hey - don't think that will stop them from supporting Obama. What's more important: A few million living Jews or the unfettered right to murder more unborn ones?We are deeply disappointed and saddened by this decidedly un-Presidential exchange between Presidents Sarkozy and Obama.Perhaps if the ADL spent less time hushing Americans it wouldn’t be surprised when Obama acts like Obama.
President Obama’s response to Mr. Sarkozy implies that he agrees with the French leader. In light of the revelations here, we hope that the Obama Administration will do everything it can to reassure Israel that the relationship remains on a sure footing and to reinvigorate the trust between President Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu, which clearly is not what it should be.
What is sad is that we now have to worry to what extent these private views inform foreign policy decisions of the U.S. and France — two singularly important players in the peace process.
