Tisha b'Av 5771

Monday night and Tuesday are Tisha b'Av, the ninth day of the Jewish month of Av, the saddest day on the Jewish calendar.

Five tragedies befell the Jewish people on Tisha b'Av in ancient times, the two most important of which were the destruction of the two Holy Temples:

- It was decreed that the generation which left Egypt would remain in the desert for 40 years and not enter the land of Israel, after believing the inaccurate report of 10 of the 12 spies in the year 2449 (the current Jewish year is 5771).

- The first Bet Hamikdash (Holy Temple) was destroyed on 9 B'Av in the year 3339.

- The second Bet Hamikdash (Holy Temple) was destroyed on 9 B'Av about 1941 years ago.

- The city of Betar was captured and tens of thousands of Jews were killed in the year 3893.

- The wicked Turnus Rufus plowed the site of the Bet Hamikdash and its surroundings and renamed it Aelia Capitolina, also in the year 3893.

Since these tragedies occurred on 9 B'Av, it was decreed as a day of fasting and mourning.

Other tragedies that happened on 9 b'Av include:

- 4,000 Jews were expelled from England by King Edward I in the year 5050 (18 July 1290)

- 300,000 Jews were expelled from Spain by Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon in the year 5252 (2 August 1492)

- Word War 1 started in 5674 - 1 August 1914 - with Germany declaring war on Russia

- The Jews of Gaza were to have been expelled from their homes on Tisha b'Av six years ago, but the Israeli government postponed the expulsion for a day in an effort to avoid making this list.

You can find out more about Tisha b'Av, including online audio and visual programs and a live webcast, here.

Posting on Tuesday (especially early in the day) may be a little lighter than usual (many of Monday's posts were scheduled in advance - including this one. I don't fast well, and must sleep tonight or I will get caffeine addiction headaches).

For those of you who are fasting, have an easy and meaningful fast, and may this day be a holiday next year instead of a day of mourning.

Tch Tch, and to think if you had to fast from dawn to dusk like Muslims do during Ramadan. Those who sleep during the day (like some do) are cheating. The whole reason for fasting is to suffer, so you're reminded of what the disadvantaged go through and remind you to give to charity. It's very easy to forget.

Zinaddine Zidane the French football captain (who has demi god status in France and Europe) led France to glory in the World cup. He played matches when he was fasting in 40% degree heat, and still managed to wipe the floor clean with the competition.

Such is the stamina and staying power of Islam :)

It's great being Muslim.

we dont fast to suffer, its a sign of mourning. We fast to have our mind remind us of what we lost beacause we are essentially in mourning of the greatest tragedy. A person that fasts and gets sick because of it is foolish... regardless of how much a person may want to create the fast meaningful, doing it in a way that is detrimental to the body is a sign of you stating to GD that a person may not care of the greatest creation and gift- human life. Doing those type of things is just foolish.

Chayma, you're a fool. Carl is talking about fasting from dusk to dusk - let's see the Muslims doing that for any length of time.

As for what Zinedine Zidane did or did not do, all it shows is the stamina of one particular athlete, not Islam.

When you Muslims have been fasting dusk to dusk for 2,000 years, THEN you come to the Jews for comparison.

The above post by Muslima bitch Chayma is a perfect example of the arrogance of everything Islamic,

The arrogance is in me, not in Islam!

In any case, I would have thought your Tish B’av fasting rules forbade you from calling a lady a “bitch” ? Don’t they? Thank you for reminding me again of the superiority that is Islam (moral code). Oop’s there’s that arrogance again :)

beginning with the pigheaded Mohamed, the butcher, rapist and highway robber of Arabia, piss be upon him. Go right ahead and fast for your jackass "prophet".

Get your facts straight. You mean the greatest man in history. More influential than all the Prophets put together.

(Alphonse de Lamartine (History of Turkey) Lamartine, Historie de la Turquie, Paris 1854, Vol. 11 pp. 276-2727)
‘ If greatness of purpose, smallness of means and astounding results are the three criteria of human genius, who could compare any great man in modern history with Muhammad.

The most famous men created arms, laws and empires only. They founded, if anything at all, no more than material powers which often crumbled before their eyes. This man Muhammad moved not only armies, legislations, empires, peoples and dynasties but millions of men, and more than that he moved the alters, the gods, the religions, the ideas, the beliefs and the souls. On the basis of a Book, every letter of which has become law, he created a spiritual nationality which blended together peoples of every tongue and of every race.

Philosopher, Orator, Apostle, Legislator, Warrior, Conqueror of ideas, restorer of rational beliefs, of a cult without images, the founder of twenty terrestrial empires and of one spiritual empire. That is Muhammad.

As regards all standards by which human greatness may be measured, we may well ask, is there any man greater than he?

Tell me, how is your idealogical twin Breiviek faring after his mass murder spree? You both worship at the alter of Jihad Watch. The fruits of evil are evil.

Sighhhhhhhh,

The comparison was between two men fasting. One complaining about caffeine headaches, and the other winning physically demanding football matches in 40 degree temperatures, during Ramadan, whilst fasting.

By the way, my post was addressed to Carl. I don't know why all his hench men and hench women came crawling out to attack me.

Chayma,

This is indeed a dusk to dusk (25-hour) fast, one of only two we have during the year. When the fast starts at dawn (our other fasts), I rise before dawn to eat and drink coffee (yes, I know, Muslims don't drink coffee, but Jews do and it's been found to be quite healthy for you).

Besides, I suspect I'm a bit older than your French 'football' player and it's hotter in Israel than it is in France.

Got any friends in Tottenham?

Muslims do drink coffee. It's said to have been discovered by Sufi Muslims, and due to it's stimulative effects it was banned for a while, but that ban was lifted. Tea and coffee and other caffeine based beverages are drunk widely in the Muslim world.

Zidane isn't just any football player, he is a living legend.

Age has nothing to do with it, you can be a caffeine addict at age 14, and full of vigour at age 90 :)

No, I havn't got any friends in Tottehnam..however Melanie Philips might do ;)

carl,

thank you for leaving chayma's posts up...her willfull ignorance (didnt even to bother using google) about the total restrictions of the day, and the week before, shows how much of a jew hater she really is

hey chayma...bet you didnt know that this is a 24 hour fast and that jews are also prohibited from bathing, anointing, wearing leather shoes and engaging in marital relations...one also cannot wash ones mouth out..even if one does not swallow

also, jews do not eat meat the entire week before, so the final meal leading up to the fast is not all that filling

I suggest you follow your own advice.

Fact 1:
Islam is not a desert religion it is a global religion. We don’t recognise borders, the earth belongs to God and only God has sovereignty. Islam didn’t begin with the Prophet in Mecca, it goes back all the way to Adam. We recognise all the Monotheisms. Adam was the first Monotheistic. When humanity perished in the flood, that mantle was passed to Noah.

Fact 2:
Coffee cannot grow in a desert? Have you heard of the wheat farms in Saudi Arabia, desert turned green? Have you heard of the ski slopes in Dubai? Snow isn’t supposed to exist in the desert!

Coffee is indigenous to Ethiopia and was discovered by Ethiopian shepherds not Muslims.

Though it was discovered in Ethiopia the coffee beans were not fully utilised till later. Coffee was first used as a beverage in Yemen by Sufi Muslim, in the 14th or 15th centuries, It was banned at first as it caused a controversy when it first started being consumed, as it was energising. The reasoning (religious) for that was because intoxicants are forbidden to us. Due to dispute over this ruling, it was abandoned, as the prohibition wasn’t as clear as the one against alcohol for example. Caffeine is the active ingredient in Cola, Coca Cola uses a derirative of cocaine in it’s formula, that’s why some people are addicted to it.

Did you have to come crawling out too, with your obligatory “jew hatred” complex?

When I was talking of fasting I was speaking of our own laws for Ramadan fasting, not the Tish B’av fasting. My post wasn’t addressed to you, it was meant as a joke, otherwise I know (since you have difficulty understanding plain English and see conspiracies everywhere) I would have had to spell out everything I meant.

hey chayma...bet you didnt know that this is a 24 hour fast and that jews are also prohibited from bathing, anointing, wearing leather shoes and engaging in marital relations...one also cannot wash ones mouth out..even if one does not swallow

We have those same restrictions and they can only be excused if there is a medical condition that requires an exception, as the saving of a life is more important. By the way, some Muslims don’t bother getting up at dawn, thus go through a 24 hour fast too.

Mestrual, nursing and pregnant women are also exempt as are sick and frail people. They can either give a fidya (charity to feed needy people) or fast at a later date.

Do you have the same exemptions and penance?

Besides, you do not have a continuous month (or longer) of fasting. Thugs and hoodlums like Shy Guy would be real men, if you did, instead of the sorry impotent mess they are. All mouth and no action!

Islam isn't even a religion, it is a cult. It holds all the earmarks of a cult and a dangerous one at that.

Oh and it is considered a desert religion/cult.

As for Arabs growing coffee in the Desert. Maybe in the 20th century, not in the 7th. Yemen is not noted for its coffee or its growing expertise. In fact, no Arab is known for their expertise in Desert farming. It took Jews living in Israel to perfect that skill.

FACT: Coca Cola has not used Cocaine in their formula since 1917. You are spouting an Urban Legend. Not a fact. Nor is Coke addicting. People drink the soft drinks they enjoy, not because they are addicted. Learn what addiction is.
