What's the 'Palestinians' game?

The big story in this region this week was the announcement that Hamas and Fatah have 'reconciled.' What does it all mean? Do the 'Palestinians' really believe that they're going to get away with this, keep their aid money and keep 'negotiations' (or the promise of negotiations) going. Apparently, they do.

The 'Palestinians' believe that they have a much better chance of getting their drive for 'statehood' through the United Nations if only they arrive at the UN 'unified.' As others have pointed out, the unity is not real - Hamas and Fatah still hate each other. The proof of that is the fact that the 'elections' aren't going to take place until long after the UN fiasco, just in case they have a falling out.

And the 'negotiations'? The way they're handling that one is to claim that the 'negotiations' are being conducted by the PLO, that Hamas is not part of the PLO, and that the PLO will be happy to resume negotiations just as soon as Israel agrees that their outcome will be a return to the 1967 Auschwitz lines. After all, that tactic has worked until now, why should it stop working?

Ah, but you thought they were going to 'reform' the PLO and make Hamas a part of it. Well, they are. But only after the elections.

So the PLO can be presented as Israel's negotiating partner which does not include Hamas at least until after the UN vote in September. After that, either the deal will fall apart, or Hamas will take over the PLO and there will be no more 'peace process.' Either way, the 'Palestinians' will have achieved recognition for their reichlet.

So far, it appears to be working. The UN is gushing with enthusiasm over the unity prospect, and the Europeans haven't ruled it out either. As to the money, we can still hope that the US Congress will have something to say about that.

What could go wrong?
