Obama under pressure to act on Libya
President Obama is under pressure to act on Libya as dozens of Libyans die and Obama remains silent. The administration faced calls for military actions ranging from bombing Libyan airfields and imposing no-fly-zones, and criticism of Obama's silence on the violence in which hundreds have died.So why the silence?
Senator John Kerry, the influential chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, called on the Obama administration to consider reimposing tough sanctions on Libya.
"World leaders must together put Colonel Gaddafi on notice that his cowardly actions will have consequences," Kerry said.
Kerry's outspoken Republican counterpart in the House of Representatives, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, said the United States and other nations should impose economic sanctions, including freezing assets and issuing a travel ban on senior Libyan government officials and their families.
The Washington Post said in an editorial the United States needed to take more forceful action against Libya, including a public call for a new government. Libya has been a U.S. adversary for most of Gaddafi's 41-year rule.
Clinton hinted that Washington's cautious response so far might be linked to concerns about the safety of U.S. citizens in Libya. "The safety and wellbeing of Americans has to be our highest priority." she said. That's a new one. Do they think that Gadhafi has the time to go searching for US citizens?
The U.S. State Department earlier said it had been unable to move any of its nonessential diplomats and embassy family members out of Libya. Spokesman P.J. Crowley said 35 employees and their families were expected to leave within days.
Dozens of anti-Gaddafi protesters gathered outside the White House chanting "White House where are you? Libya now needs you."

Hello!?! Dozens being killed in Libya? 3,000 were killed in Juarez, right on the U.S.'s southern border in the year 2010 and this president says NOTHING. As a matter of fact, he sues and otherwise tries to block the adjacent states trying to take ANY action. He campaigned for a friend/cousin in Kenya, who sent out the machete monsters when he didn't like the election results. While one might want the U.S. military to do something re Libya, I can't think you would want their commander in chief who doesn't mind genocide to be anywhere near the place.
And Kerry! Remember he rabble roused until the U.S. defunded our ally in S. Vietnam, resulting in millions dead in the region. And these people said nothing at the time and will still say that it wasn't their fault. OMG what a mess.
A genocide continued year in and year out in Dharfur and successive administrations didn't act directly. Is the plight of the Libyan people an American problem? Perhaps not. If so BHO is not the commander in chief you want in place.
Sparky - Genocide is the default setting among tribes, religious streams, etc., and not just in Sudan. My mom used to tell a story of us being in Rabat, grocery shopping in town, when the Army came from one side and the Burbers came on horses from another side... my mom put my sister and me into the stroller, threw her shoes on top of us, and ran. They were slitting the throats of the French in their beds...
So the progress toward life seems to be being undermined by a man who, unfortunately, seems to have on tribal glasses rather than equal standing of individuals before the law/govt glasses. Anyway, it is mainly back to the future. Read this (or re-read it with today in mind, if you've read it before):
