Today in Jewish history

Today is a rather interesting day in Jewish history. The date is the 19th day of the Jewish month of Shevat (Hat Tip: Gary P).

19 Shevat

1349-- Auto de Fe in Basel, Switzerland. Over 600 Jews burned Alive in a specially constructed wooden crematorium. Swiss Jewry does not surpass its 1348 population for over 500 years.

Precisely 600 years later to the day, Dr Chaim Weitzmann is named First President of Israel.
