As Washington talks start, 70% of 'Palestinians' favor 'resistance through violence,' 75% believe demilitarization unacceptable
With the Washington talks to open this week,
this poll ought to convince most people of what President Obumbler chooses to ignore: The 'Palestinian people' are not ready to make ANY sacrifices for 'peace' (via
IMRA, which gave the summary below). Here are some highlights of the results.
Here are some choice results:
With regards to rebuilding confidence in the peace process please indicate which of the following options you consider to be 'Essential', 'Desirable', 'Acceptable', 'Tolerable' or 'Unacceptable'.
Resist occupation through violence to achieve a state
Essential 36.7 Desirable 18.7 Acceptable 16.8
Tolerable 14.0 Unacceptable 13.7
With regards to the final status of Palestine and Israel please indicate which of the following you consider to be Essential, Desirable, Acceptable, Tolerable or Unacceptable as part of a peace agreement.
Historic Palestine - from the Jordan River to the sea as a national homeland for Palestinians
Essential 78.2 Desirable 12.5 Acceptable 4.3
Tolerable 3.1 Unacceptable 2.0
With regards to refugees please indicate which of the following options you consider to be Essential, Desirable, Acceptable, Tolerable or Unacceptable as part of a peace agreement.
The number of refugees returning to Israel should be limited to family members and numbers agreed between Israel and Palestine
Essential 3.7 Desirable 7.8 Acceptable 11.9
Tolerable 16.9 Unacceptable 59.6
With regards to the issue of security please indicate which of the following options you consider to be Essential, Desirable, Acceptable, Tolerable or Unacceptable as part of a peace agreement.
Palestine should be demilitarized, including the disbanding of militias and the standing down of the military.
Essential 7.8 Desirable 5.5 Acceptable 4.0
Tolerable 7.6 Unacceptable 75.0
[What's striking about that last result is what went with it: The overwhelming majority want a 'Palestinian army' and a 'strong' 'Palestinian police force' and they want Israel demilitarized. I sure hope we won't see that happen. CiJ].
With regards to Jerusalem please indicate which of the following options you consider to be Essential, Desirable, Acceptable, Tolerable or Unacceptable as part of a peace agreement.
All of Jerusalem (East and West) should remain in Palestine
Essential 84.1 Desirable 10.3 Acceptable 2.2
Tolerable 1.6 Unacceptable 1.7
Do you believe that Palestinians and Israelis will coexist if Palestinians gain their own independent state?
Yes 16.7 Maybe 37.7 No 42.3 Don't know 3.2]
What could go wrong?

If the world were made up of readers, these results would be absolutely expected. Many are wishing that the behavior of Middle Easterners could be accounted for by the irritating thorn of the Jewish state of Israel, and the apartment buildings on the hills. But they would be wrong.
Winston Churchill figured out the situation in 1898 in Sudan, before WWI or WWII and certainly before Israel's founding. People always cite "nationalism" and "racism" and "imperialism" as relates to the Brit forays back then. But, reading this book (or listening), one hears that the Brits left Sudan, at which time the slave trade and slaughtering was re-established by the Egyptians and Turks. The Brit churchpeople were disgusted by it and clamored for re-engagement.
Churchill's familiarity with the region resulted in the allies' very strong action in North Africa during WWII. Listen to Churchill's account of 1898 Sudan for FREE online or download it an put it as an unshuffled playlist on your iPod.

Really, Israel is pushing for an upgrade over the normal way of things described in River War (and the implications of this "resistance" poll). I've met people from India who say they now feel like they won the lottery that the Brits stayed in India long enough to break the pattern of slaughter... Israel is also working toward that upgrade, but from an indigenous position.
I read that Churchill wrote a second book around the same time (while he was in the UK Army) re the Kush area. I'll see if I can find it. And maybe I'll contact this reader to se whether he would be willing to read out that one, too. He has a great voice.
Well, boker tov. Let the sun shine in.
The Palestinians are not ready for a two state solution. The maximum Israel could offer is less than what any Palestinian leader could accept and still survive in office. Israel has a set of demands related to peace that no Palestinian leader is going to accept now or in the foreseeable future.
