State Department calls for investigation into Rachel Corrie death

While we're setting up investigations, the State Department has called for an investigation into the death of Rachel Corrie. Corrie died playing chicken with an Israeli bulldozer while she was trying to protect a Hamas weapons tunnel in 2003.
"Rachel Corrieā€™s parents have visited the department regularly since March of 2003 and her tragic death, and we continue to provide them with support and assistance," P.J. Crowley, the State Department spokesman, said in Wednesday's briefing with reporters. "And the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv is attending an ongoing civil lawsuit filed by the family against Israel, and that opened in Haifa on March 10th. We continue to stress to the Government of Israel at the highest levels to continue a thorough, transparent, and credible investigation of the circumstances concerning her death.

...

An Israeli army investigation following Corrie's death found that the driver of the bulldozer could not see Corrie and did not intentionally run over her. The report accused Corrie and the pro-Palestinian International Solidarity Movement of "illegal, irresponsible and dangerous" behavior.

...

Crowley did not say why the United States was not satisfied with the Israeli army's probe. In similar cases, however, most recently involving Israel's deadly raid on an aid flotilla, the Obama administration has indicated that it sees civilian inquiries as more independent than those conducted by the military.

In the civil case under way, Corrie's parents reportedly are demanding $324,000 in damages from the Israel Defense Forces.

The Corries lost a lawsuit against Caterpillar Inc., the U.S. company that manufactured the bulldozer.
Read the whole thing.

I have discussed Rachel Corrie at great length here, here and here, among other places.

Unfortunately, the video I used for that last post has been taken down. I've managed to find some of it again. Let's go to the videotape.

After all this time, you would think the truth about Rachiel Corrie's death has been established.

Apparently not to the satisfaction of the State Department.

What could go wrong indeed

So the IDF are not credible. When was the last time the US rejected a US military investigation as "not credible"? Does it have to have international participation, as America demanded for the Mavi Marmara investigation? The Obama administration is chipping away at Israel's legitimacy, a bit at a time.

the response should be that this is no one else's business (as Egypt did recently to an EU inquiry into the death by police beating of a blogger). If you act like a punching bag, you become a punching bag.

To the author of this blog:

Saying that Corrie was playing "chicken" with a "dinosaur"
bulldozer is disrespectful to the fine person that she was,
as well as to her memory. Where is your sensitivity to her
heroic stance that ended in her martyrdom ? But she was not a
terrorist, but a determined activist for love and peace, those
rare attitudes so much missing these days in this world that
define us as human and special, apart from the other animals.
Corrie did what she did because she "loved" humanity, she
believed in equality, love and peace for all humanity, in this
particular case it was for the Palestinian people, but she would
have stuck up for anyone who was persecuted from her point
of view. I'm sure that the ordinary Palestinian people, not the
terrorists, but the simple folk are just as terrorized as the rest
of is by the terrorists. The reports said she was trying to protect
a Palestinian doctor's house from being destroyed. The other
report said the bulldozer driver couldn't see her. If the latter
was true, then an independent investigation would give some
closure to her poor parents and maybe produce more fruitful
negotiations and understanding between the warring sides.
You know, Often there is more in common between the citizens
of each warring side than between the citizens and their rulers.
By the way, if you haven't seen Rachel's speech (on youtube)
as an 11 year-old, where she clearly stated what her mission in
life was to be, I encourage you to see it some time when you
are free. For the moment, though I can only imagine that your
job might be for let's say a "public relations" role. In ending
I only hope that your wishes are similar to mine, in that the
powers-that-rule use greater thought and discrimination
relating to the long-term effects of their actions and that their
struggle for power is tempered by greater consideration and
concern for their less powerful brothers and sisters. [By the
way you don't need this comment to be posted, and you may
if you wish take any parts of it out and to post those out on their
own, my intent was only to tell YOU what I think.]
In closing may I wish that you and your family's future be
blessed, happy and fulfilled. I hold the the same wish for ALL
of our brothers and sisters. I'm sure that the common person
just wants to live in peace, to be able to see themselves
progressing from their work effort, to be able to contribute to
his or her family's well-being, to feel respect and and love from
his or her family and local society. Is that too much to ask for ?
I honestly believe that when we harm others we unknowingly
harm ourselves. And when we embrace and care for others
we feel the FAITH, LOVE and the very SPIRIT of G_D ourselves,
these are our birthrights, aren't they ?!
