Israeli embassy in London promoting 'Peace Now'?

On Friday, I wrote a post in which I noted the change between the current foreign ministry and the foreign ministries in the previous governments. I noted that the current foreign ministry sees its job as bringing to light 'Palestinian' incitement while in previous foreign ministries, the job was viewed as creating a 'Palestinian state.' Perhaps, I spoke too soon.

The email below was sent out by Israel's embassy in London on Tuesday (the picture is Ron Prosor, Israel's ambassador to St. James Court). Emphases in it are mine (Hat Tip: Judy B).

Subject: Gavri Bargil lecture, Thurs 13, 1800, LSE

Dear all,

We thought you may be interested to know of an event on Thursday that should prove well worth attending:

Gavri Bargil will be speaking at LSE (Room H102 – nearest Tube: Holborn; click here for a map), at 1800.

After serving as a brigade commander in the Israel Defence Forces, Mr Bargil was General Director of the Kibbutz Movement in Israel from 2000 – 2009.

In 1988, at the outbreak of the Intifada, Mr Bargil joined Peace Now as an activist, and soon after, he assumed the position of Peace Now Executive Director. He was involved in co-directing, with Ziad Abu Ziad, the Israeli-Palestinian Information Centre for Peace.

In addition, between 1996-1999 Mr Bargil was the head representative of the Kibbutz Artzi movement in North America, and political representative of Meretz and Peace Now.

He’s clearly a hugely interesting man, and we’d like to see a good turnout at his talk – do please attend if you can, and spread the word.

Regards,

Shual

Can someone please explain to me why a representative of the Israeli government would be promoting a lecture by someone whose viewpoint is so clearly not the government's viewpoint? Don't we have enough enemies in Europe without creating more?

UPDATE 8:46 PM

Lest you think it's just that Israel's embassy in London supports all Israeli speakers, I am informed that Benny Begin - who is a cabinet minister - is speaking in London on Wednesday (today) and that no email has been sent out by Israel's embassy in London to tell people.

Carl - there is still Oslo deadwood in the Foreign Minisry - and if you think all the holdovers from previous leftist governments are gone by now, think again.

All the same, I'm not exactly shocked by that circular.

What could go wrong indeed
