Egypt declares state of emergency along Gaza border
Egypt has declared a state of emergency along its border with Gaza out of fear that Gaza 'Palestinians' will attempt a mass 'breakout' as happened in January 2008. The move comes days after four Palestinians died and six were injured inside a smuggling tunnel under the border. Medics accused Egyptian forces of spraying a chemical as part of a crackdown on smuggling. Egypt denied using gas, but confirmed placing explosives inside a tunnel.Regarding the tunnel explosions, JPost adds:
Cairo has recently escalated its crackdown on the besieged Palestinian enclave, cooperating with Israel's blockade. Smugglers say officials are seizing goods almost daily, and regularly shutting down tunnels.
Egypt, however, denied the reports, saying that it routinely blows up the mouths to the tunnels to seal them off, and that the blast and an ensuing fire could quickly use up all the oxygen in the confined space, causing people caught inside to suffocate.
