Video: Edward R. Murrow at Buchenwald

Holocaust Memorial Day is being observed today in Israel. This video is a report filed by famed broadcaster Edward R. Murrow describing his presence at the Buchenwald concentration camp's liberation in 1945.

Let's go to the videotape (Hat Tip: NY Nana).

I have no words.

UPDATE 12:25 PM

Actually, I do have a few words. Is it my imagination or did Murrow not use the word "Jew" once in that entire report?

Were there no Jews in Buchenwald? I don't believe that.

There certainly were Jews in Buchenwald (Elie Wiesel for one), but I think that unlike many others, it was not a predominantly Jewish concentration camp.

No mention of Jews, BUT he did mention that the prisoners had one word on their lips 'Roosevelt who they hanged onto for hope'.

As he toured the camp he went to the kitchen and talked to "a German Communist" and then he went to the "czech house" and he talked about the professions of the men there.

According to www.jewishgen.com (Jewish Genealogy .com) it seems this was a mixed camp with Jews, russians, poles, gypsies.

Thanks for the hat tip, Carl.

I was a kid during WII...born just before it, but I still remember what it was like on Comm. Ave, in Brighton, when the air raid wardens would walk up Comm. Ave and make sure all the curtains and shades were drawn and no light was showing. Becuse we were on the first floor, if there was any sign of a light, we would have a baton tap the window.I didn't really comprehend what was going on until I was about 5 or 6, as my uncles were in Europe, and sent me mails.. To me? Each camp was a death chamber. After the War, my Mum zt"l sent me Anne Franks' book..while I was at summer camp. I still have it, and will give it to my oldest granddaughter when my son and daughter in law will approve it.

When they showed the first newsreels in the movie theaters? I can never, ever forgive or forget. And re Edward R. Murrow? I do not recall his mentioning the Jews either. On a lot of news re The Shoah? The Jews were mentioned as an after-thought in too many cases.
