Netanyahu interview with ABC's George Stephanopoulos
Prime Minister Netanyahu was interviewed Monday morning on ABC's Good Morning America by George Stephanopoulos.Let's go to the videotape. Comments after the videotape.
On US - Israeli relations, they seem to be talking past each other.
For the record, Ramat Shlomo was not exactly 'empty land' when the Oslo Accords were signed in 1993. First, it had been prepared for use as a soccer stadium in the late 1970's, but the city decided to build the stadium on the other (south) side of town).
Second, the government started to sell apartments in Ramat Shlomo in early 1992. The contracts for those apartments were not signed until late 1993, but the foundation work was actually begun in early 1993. So there was already construction going there when Yitzchak Rabin shook Yasser Arafat's hand on the White House lawn in September 1993.
Here's the part where they talk about Iran.
Let's go to the videotape.
Netanyahu advocates the refined petroleum sanctions that Congress has already passed (in two separate bills). He wants crippling sanctions NOW.
Note how he ducked the questions about how far away Iran is from nuclear weapons and what is the red line Israel will not allow Iran to cross.
And here's the part where they discussed the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty.
Let's go to the videotape.
Note why he says that the Islamists hate us. Given the state of our relations with the US, maybe they shouldn't hate us so much anymore.

And as Netanyahu correctly observed, the Palestinians would never accept pre-conditions from Israel. They have no right to impose them on Israel and Jewish construction in Jerusalem never kept them from negotiating with previous Israeli governments. They are the ones who don't want to sit at the table with Israel. But for some odd reason, its Israel that gets blamed for not being "sincere enough" in seeking peace!
I really wish he would show more backbone. I think people would support Israel more if our leaders didn't pander to the delusions and false preconceptions that frame most American's understanding of the Middle East. If he would show more guts and just tell the truth, and let loose a little long-overdue righteous indignation once in awhile, I think there would be more support for Israel than there is. Our enemies have no problem getting up and lying as loud as possible, we can take the gloves off already and call a spade a spade. Anything less just begs it to continue.
