The loyal puppy dog
Congressman Gary Ackerman (D-NY) rips opponents of 'engagement' with Syria. “Appeasement! Appeasement!” they cry, attempting to evoke the days leading to World War II.Where is the surrender and sell-out of allies? Lebanon (or maybe he thinks they really support Hezbullah). Israel (Assad, Ahmadinejad and Nasrallah weren't exactly planning a party for us). Syria's own democratic opposition (the Obama administration doesn't care about democracy anyplace else so why in Syria). But I guess Gary thinks that's rain emanating from Damascus and that Assad wasn't spitting in Obama's face.
This charge is grotesque. Apart from the indecency of comparison with the unique horror and evil of Nazi Germany, the cheap demagoguery of the word utterly fails to capture what the Obama Administration is actually doing. Where, one might ask, is the long list of concessions from America to Syria? Where is the surrender and sell-out of allies? Where is the retreat in the face of challenge? A few airplane parts? A few inconclusive meetings?
The string of defeats and failures that brought us to the current impasse occurred, let us not forget, during the previous Administration. The seeming limits of American power were brutally exposed well before Barack Obama was even elected to his high office.
Appeasement? Shameless nonsense. And more empty words.
It is true that the Obama Administration is pursuing a different policy than the spectacular failure of its predecessor. But that’s just good sense. Everywhere but Washington, not repeating mistakes is considered a good, or even a very good thing.
What could go wrong?

Actually, the Syrian regime provides asylum to Nazi war criminals like Alois Brunner. If Ackerman wants to set up a straw man, he should at least make sure it is legit one.
Gerry Ackerman's US Senate colleague, who is Jewish - Chuck Schumer lit into the Obami policy towards Israel. Why couldn't he see the light? It makes you wonder why some Jews are lapdogs for the Administration's unprecedented assault upon the Jewish State at the same time it climbs into bed with a brutal dictatorship like Syria's. Some people are just lacking in decency.
